NES (National Export System)
The National Export System, or NES, has been developed by HM Customs to bring the United Kingdom’s export system into an electronic environment. This offers huge benefits to traders able to automate their processes. Under NES, all goods must be positively released by HM Customs before they may be exported. Carriers (the airlines and shipping lines) will not dispatch goods until an export entry has been presented to HM Customs and confirmation of release is obtained.
NES is designed to be an electronic reporting system. HM Customs have made this an open system. A trader or his nominated representative may make a HM Customs entry by any viable means. This includes entry at the port, entry from the trader’s own premises or at any point up to loading. Submission of the entry may be via a port community system, through the Web or E-mail attachment.
